# workbench__update_step

> Updates one top-level step in the plan draft.

* Changes its tool, input (replaced whole), reasoning, or id.
* Renaming rewrites `{{id.*}}` references in later steps, the solver and the output.
* Refused only if it adds a new validation problem.

## Input

**id** `string` *required*

The step to update.

**input** `object`

New tool input — replaces the step's entire input object.

**newId** `string`

Rename the step; downstream template references are rewritten.

**reasoning** `string`

New reasoning; an empty string clears it.

**toolName** `string`

New tool name from the catalog.
