# Environment variables

## Output and logging

**GRAPH\_EVENTS** `enum\<string\>`

How graph reports progress and failures on stderr. Unset, stderr is for people.

| Value | Effect |
| - | - |
| `jsonl` | stderr becomes a stream of JSON events, one per line. `ask` steps can't prompt anyone, so they use their `whenUnanswered` setting. |
| `github` | A failing `graph plan run` also prints a `::error::` annotation to stdout, which GitHub Actions shows on the run. |

**GRAPH\_LOG** `string`

A log filter for stderr, such as `info` or `graph=debug`. `-v`, `-vv` and `-vvv` set `info`, `debug` and `trace`.

## Storage

**GRAPH\_STORAGE** `enum\<string\>` (default: file)

Where graph keeps threads and the shape cache.

Overrides [`storage.backend`](/reference/configuration#param-storage-backend) in config.toml.

| Value | Effect |
| - | - |
| `file` | Under `settings.data_dir`. |
| `memory` | In memory only. Nothing is kept between runs. |

## Workbench

**GRAPH\_WORKBENCH\_LOG** `string` (default: \<data\_dir>/workbench.log)

Where the workbench writes its log.

Overrides [`workbench.log_path`](/reference/configuration#param-workbench-log-path) in config.toml.

## Telemetry

**OTEL\_EXPORTER\_OTLP\_ENDPOINT** `string`

The OTLP/HTTP endpoint to export to.

Overrides [`telemetry.endpoint`](/reference/configuration#param-telemetry-endpoint) in config.toml.

**OTEL\_EXPORTER\_OTLP\_PROTOCOL** `enum\<string\>` (default: http/protobuf)

The export wire format.

Overrides [`telemetry.protocol`](/reference/configuration#param-telemetry-protocol) in config.toml.

| Value | Effect |
| - | - |
| `http/protobuf` | Protobuf over HTTP. |
| `http/json` | JSON over HTTP. |

**OTEL\_EXPORTER\_OTLP\_TIMEOUT** `integer`

Export timeout, in milliseconds.

Overrides [`telemetry.timeout_secs`](/reference/configuration#param-telemetry-timeout-secs) in config.toml.

**OTEL\_EXPORTER\_OTLP\_HEADERS** `string`

Extra headers as comma-separated `key=value` pairs, added to the configured ones.

Overrides [`telemetry.headers`](/reference/configuration#param-telemetry-headers) in config.toml.

**OTEL\_SERVICE\_NAME** `string`

The `service.name` resource attribute.

Overrides [`telemetry.service_name`](/reference/configuration#param-telemetry-service-name) in config.toml.
