# graph ask

> Ask a one-shot question (runs one agent turn)

Runs one turn of the default `chat` agent, or the agent named with `--agent`, and streams its answer to stdout. Piped stdin is appended to the message as input context.

Put `--thread` after the message, since it takes an optional value. On an existing thread, `--agent` must name the thread's owner.

With `--json`, prints `{content, tool_calls_made, tools_used, usage, thread_id, agent}` instead of streaming.

## Arguments

**MESSAGE** `string`

The message; reads stdin when omitted and piped

## Options

**--agent** `string`

Run a named agent instead of the default `chat` agent

Format: `AGENT`.

**--thread** `string`

Continue a thread: `--thread <id>` for a specific one, bare `--thread` for the most recent. Omit to start a new thread

Format: `THREAD`.

The value is optional: `--thread` on its own is accepted.

**--json** `boolean`

Emit a JSON envelope instead of streaming text

**--no-stream** `boolean`

Print the final answer only, without streaming

## Global options

**-v, --verbose** `integer`

Increase log verbosity (-v info, -vv debug, -vvv trace)

```bash Usage theme={null}
graph ask [OPTIONS] [MESSAGE]
```

```bash Example 1 theme={null}
graph ask "Which issues are blocking the release?"
```

```bash Example 2 theme={null}
git diff | graph ask "Review this diff"
```

```bash Example 3 theme={null}
graph ask --agent release_notes "What shipped this week?"
```

```bash Example 4 theme={null}
```
