# MCP

> graph is both an MCP client, using other servers' tools, and an MCP server, giving other clients your plans.

graph works with the [Model Context Protocol](https://modelcontextprotocol.io) in both directions. As a client, it adds other servers' tools to your catalog. As a server, it gives MCP clients such as Claude and Cursor your plans as tools.

```toml Client: config.toml theme={null}
[mcp.tracker]
url = "https://mcp.example.com/mcp"
headers = { Authorization = "Bearer ${TRACKER_TOKEN}" }
[mcp.everything]
command = "npx"
args = ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-everything"]
```

```json Server: client config theme={null}
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "graph": {
      "command": "graph",
      "args": ["mcp", "serve", "--dir", "/path/to/project"]
    }
  }
}
```

## graph as an MCP client

Each [`[mcp.<name>]`](/reference/configuration#param-mcp) table in config.toml connects one server, over stdio with `command` or streamable HTTP with `url`. The server's tools join the catalog as `<name>__<tool>`, and agents and plan steps call them like any other tool.

You choose which of a server's tools graph loads, and can correct a tool's description or output shape when the server's own is wrong or missing.

## graph as an MCP server

`graph mcp serve` runs graph as an MCP server over stdio. A connected client gets one tool per plan in your catalog, named `plan_<identifier>`, plus [tools for writing and testing plans](/integrating/mcp/reference/server-tools). An `ask` step in a plan reaches the client's user as an elicitation request.
